Potential Use of Human Placental Derived Stem Cells (HPDSCs) as a Novel Stem Cell Source for the Treatment of Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (RDEB)

      Background: RDEB is an inherited skin blistering disease caused by mutations in COL7A1 that encodes C7, a major component in anchoring fibrils at the basement membrane. We recently demonstrated that human cord blood (CB) derived unrestricted somatic stem cells promote wound healing and ameliorate blistering phenotype in Col7a1-/- (RDEB) mice. We also reported our experience in using HPDSCs as novel and universal donor cells to enhance CB engraftment and immune reconstitution in patients with malignant and non-malignant diseases.
