Scalable Production of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells in a Novel Bioreactor Using a Xenogenic Free Culture System

As cellular therapeutics move from small scale to large scale manufacturing, systems to allow for scalability while keeping safety and regulatory concerns managed become critical. Three dimensional culture in bioreactors with microcarriers has been evaluated as a means to reach this end. In this study, a novel bioreactor system (MAG 3L, PBS Biotech) was employed in conjunction with non-coated plastic microcarriers (Star Plus, Pall Medical) and xenogenic free medium containing human platelet lysate (Stemulate NH, Cook Regentec).
